The Wellington Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit

The Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit at The Wellington Hospital is recognised as a leading UK tertiary centre for the treatment of complex peripheral nerve injuries.

The Unit’s comprehensive range of services include nerve surgery for traumatic lesions including highly complex brachial and lumbo-sacral plexus repair and nerve transplantations in both infants and adults to restore both sensory and motor functions.

Some patients are seen and treated as emergencies as a result of acute trauma, and others are referred because of chronic problems associated with earlier injury.

A range of other surgical treatments are offered, these include:
  • Secondary reconstructive procedures such as nerve or muscular transfers to restore function when nerves have been permanently damaged.
  • Decompressions for entrapment neuropathy.
  • Surgical treatment for neuropathic pain.
  • Removal of malignant and benign tumours of nerve.
  • The correction of musculoskeletal abnormalities secondary to birth brachial plexus palsies (Erbs Palsy).
